Ongoing Events: The American economy took a sharp downturn in mid-1937, lasting for 13 months through most of 1938. Industrial production declined almost 30 percent, and production of durable goods fell even faster. Unemployment jumped from 14.3% in May 1937 to 19.0% in June 1938.
- November 25 – Thanksgiving Day: According to a Daily Progress article, food prices were lower than they had been the year before. [1]
Deaths
- February 5 – Shelton Fife (aged 47), as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident in Richmond while on a business trip, he had been a member of the Charlottesville City Council, from 1932 to 1936.
