Events

• June 12 – On this second Tuesday of June, voters in Charlottesville went to the polls to elect all five members of City Council. In this 1928 election, eight candidates competed for all five Council seats, the first election under the new Commission Form of government authorized by an amendment of the city charter by the General Assembly.

• September 5 – The new council, at its first regular meeting, re-elected the old members of the police force. The old members of the advisory board were also re-elected, as follows: First Ward – J. Dean Tilman; Second Ward – Sol Kaufman; Third Ward – Fred H. Quarles; Fourth Ward – Albert S. Bolling. The council voted in favor of closing Oak Street on account of the location of the new silk mill to be erected by Frank Ix & Sons, Inc.

Deaths

• March 18 – George W Buckner dies in St. Louis, Missouri. A resident of Fifeville and a prominent leader of Charlottesville's Black community, he co-founded the People’s Finance Company for Negroes and worked to organize a program of rehabilitation between Whites and Blacks for the good of the community in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Tulsa race massacre.
