Charlottesville was chartered as a city administratively independent of the county. The county seat of Albemarle County, Charlottesville incorporated and annexed surrounding land to create a city of nearly 800 acres.[1] Charlottesville was incorporated as a town in 1801.
Deaths
- December 31 – On West Main Street, policeman George Thomas Seal was shot and killed in the line of duty. His murdered was arrested in Richmond, following a manhunt. He was convicted, but the Virginia Supreme Court overturned the conviction. A second conviction was obtained and the murderer was hanged in the Charlottesville jail yard on April 21, 1891. [2][3]
