- February 14 – Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe and others obtain a charter from the Virginia General Assembly for Central College, which historian Philip Alexander Bruce describes as “the University in its chrysalis state.” They raise $40,000 and buy the land where the University of Virginia now sits.[1]

- August 27 – John Thornley is born in King George County to William Thornley and Jane Riding. An alumnus of the University of Virginia and later a resident of Charlottesville, Thornley served as a surgeon for the United States Navy during both the Mexican-American War and Civil War.
