- April 21 - The Albemarle County Declaration of Independence is signed by numerous prominent citizens of the county on this date.
From June 1779 to June 1781 Thomas Jefferson was governor of Virginia. At this time the state was invaded by the British troops, and Jefferson and the legislature were forced to flee from Richmond to Charlottesville, from which place they were driven by Tarleton. Jefferson lacked the troops and the money with which to defend Virginia properly.
