World War II veterans
Following the entry of the United States into World War II in December of 1941, numerous individuals from Albemarle County and Charlottesville served in the American armed forces throughout the course of the conflict.
Harry H. Gaver, who was serving aboard the USS Oklahoma during the surprise Japanese military strike on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, was killed in the attack and thus became the first UVA alumnus to die in the war.
Mary Lee Settle, a famous American writer of the twentieth century who lived in Charlottesville and taught courses at the University of Virginia throughout much of her later life, served in both the British Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and the United States Office of War Information (OWI) during the conflict.

Field nurses
During the war, the University of Virginia maintained the 8th Evacuation Hospital, serving Allied troops attached to the Fifth Army (which operated in North Africa and Italy from 1943 to 1945).[2] This 750-bed mobile hospital unit was primarily staffed by physicians and nurses who had attended the university, including First Lieutenant Alice M. Huffman (Class of 1938). In her memoirs that detailed her time serving with this unit, Huffman wrote,
"Being night supervisor in winter was a challenge. There were 20 some wards, and to make rounds twice during the 12-hour shift took a bit of stamina. We were always in a black-out area, which meant we could not use a flashlight. In good weather it wasn't too bad, but when there was sleet or snow, it was miserable... Someone once said that living through a war is the most wonderful experience in your life. Of course it's a terrible thing, but over time you forget the bad and remember the good. I got to travel and meet people I would never have gotten to meet otherwise. The whole thing was hard work, but we were with our best friends, and that made it a lot easier."
