William Smothers

William Smothers enlisted in the Revolution while residing in Powhatan County for the length of the war and was sized on 8 March 1782: age 19, 5'3-1/2" high, black hair, yellow eyes, black complexion, born in Albemarle County(source: Roll of Troops at Chesterfield Court House). He was taxable in Powhatan County from 1793 to 1804, called a "Mo" in 1793 and 1803. He appeared in Cumberland County, Virginia court to apply for a pension for his services in the Revolution, stating that he enlisted in 1781 in Captain Stephen Southall's Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Charles Harrison and served until the close of the war.[1]
