Virginia Department of Transportation
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for overseeing construction and maintenance on Virginia's primary and secondary road system.

Charlottesville and Albemarle County are both part of the Charlottesville Residency VDOT's Culpeper District and served by its Charlottesville Residency, together with Fluvanna, Greene and Louisa. The Culpeper District further includes Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock Counties in its Warrenton Residency[1].
Culpeper District
The Virginia Department of Transportation's Culpeper District is responsible for maintaining around 10,250 miles of state roads within a nine-county area including Charlottesville and Albemarle County[2]. The Culpeper District includes 70 miles of interstate highways, 730 miles of primary road and 4,104 miles of secondary roads. John D. Lynch was appointed as the administrator in June 2013. [3]

Project Pipeline
One way VDOT identifies future projects is to conduct what they call "pipeline" studies. In early 2024, there were two such projects. One covered Barracks Road between Emmet Street and the U.S. 250 bypass. The other took a look at Old Ivy Road where there are a number of future developments planned and approved. [5]
