Poor Houses or Poor Farms were

There were three Poor Farms operated by Albemarle County. The first was established in 1806, adjacent to the Sunnyside land tract, most famously owned by the Duke family. It closed in 1870, when the Dukes reclaimed that land. From 1870 until 1907, the County Poor Farm was located on 75 acres in Keswick, off of what is now Black Cat Road. The third County Poor Farm was purchased in 1905, after a fire burned down the Keswick barn, cutting into the management and capabilities of the farm. This tract of land was in Hickory Hill, near US 29 South. In November 1907, the buildings at the third farm were complete enough for residents to be relocated from the Keswick property. On the 1907 Massie Map, all three locations are marked: Old Poor House, Old Poor House (2nd), and New Poor House.
