- 1853 – E. G. Haden was born on the homestead plantation of the family in Fluvanna County.
- 1863 – The 19th Virginia Infantry, composed mostly of men from Charlottesville and Albemarle County, suffered more than a 47 percent casualty rate at the Battle of Antietam.
- 1920 – Women enrolled in the professional and graduate schools at the University of Virginia for the first time in history. During the registration for the University’s 96th session, two women enrolled in the law school, three in the medical school, and six in the graduate school.
