September 16:

  • 1776 – The 14th Virginia Regiment was raised in western Virginia for service with the Continental Army; the majority of the individuals from Albemarle County who enlisted in the Revolutionary War were assigned to this regiment and would see action in famous engagements such as the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth.
  • 1960 – Approximately 1,070 new students and more than 3,000 upperclassmen and graduate students are expected to register at the University of Virginia.
