- 1888 – Charlottesville is incorporated as a city; the first city charter establishes an elected mayor, a twelve-member board of aldermen, and seven other elected officers.
- 1908 – E. G. Haden succeeds George W. Olivier as Charlottesville’s citywide elected mayor.
