- 1882 – James Rhodes, the alleged murderer of Mr. and Mrs. John O. Massie, was taken from the jail this morning, about 1 o'clock, by a party of masked men and hung to the limb of an oak tree on the farm of Capt. Thomas L. Farish, in a field on the Free Bridge road, about half way from the town of Charlottesville to the Bridge.
- 1923 – The Coffee Shop was the scene of a large and enthusiastic gathering at the regular meeting of the Kiwanis Club. The City Manager, Boyd Bennett, drew a graphic picture of the city’s water situation. the supply was calculated to last the city only about 72 days without rain, as the present “run in” is very slight so that we are losing approximately one million gallons per day.
