- 1864 – At the Battle of Cedar Creek, fought near Middletown (~70 miles northwest), Union forces under Gen. Philip Sheridan repelled a surprise Confederate assault and achieved a dramatic afternoon counterattack. Allied casualties included approximately 5,665 Union and 2,910 Confederate soldiers. Following the battle, many wounded were transported to Charlottesville, which served as a regional medical center. Local churches, schools, and private homes were converted into makeshift hospitals to treat the injured. The battle held deep local significance, as numerous Albemarle County men fought and died there.
- 1921 – During the 1921 Confederate Reunion in Charlottesville, a 5,000-person parade featuring city officials, UVA students, veterans, and V.M.I. cadets marched to Jackson Park for the unveiling of Charles Keck’s equestrian statue of General “Stonewall” Jackson. The statue was donated by local benefactor Paul Goodloe McIntire, and the orator of the day was Senator Pat Harrison of Mississippi.
