  • 1860 – In the 1860 presidential election, Virginia was the only Southern state to include Abraham Lincoln on the ballot. He received no votes at all in Albemarle County, which included the Town of Charlottesville.
  • 1900 – United States presidential election was held. The Democratic candidate, and former U.S. Representative, William J. Bryan carried the city (66.15%, 731 votes) and the county (67.72%, 2,411 votes) over the Republican candidate, incumbent President William McKinley. Six months into his second term, McKinley was assassinated in September 1901 and was succeeded by Vice President Roosevelt.
