November 18:

  • 1846 – Governor William Smith of Virginia calls for state troops to fight in the Mexican–American War.
  • 1883 – Standard Railway Time went into effect in the United States. Prior to that, time of day was a local matter. Henry Martin was the university’s bell ringer from 1847 to 1909, a period of 62 years. He rang the bell at dawn to awaken the students, and rang it during the day to mark the hours and the beginning and ending of class periods. The Rotunda bell could be heard far beyond the Academical Village and was a familiar sound to area residents.
  • 1960 – Eight people arrested in Charlottesville as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal betting on football lotteries.
