- 1916 – State-wide prohibition went into effect, heralded by church rallies where parishioners rang bells and shouted out “Hallelujah!” at midnight. Founded in 1873 and considered the largest winery in the South, the Monticello Wine Company sold off its stock and closing its doors ― a “victim” of state-adopted prohibition.
