- 1781 – The Virginia General Assembly was scheduled to meet in Richmond but failed to reach a quorum; days later, with British forces advancing, it adjourned to reconvene in Charlottesville.
- 1784 – Thomas Jefferson was appointed by the Congress of the Confederation to join Benjamin Franklin and John Adams in Paris as Minister Plenipotentiary to negotiate treaties of amity and commerce; he departed in July 1784 with his daughter Patsy and arrived in Paris the following month.
