  • 1773 – The Virginia Gazette reported that on July 16, 1773, Dabney Carr—Charlottesville attorney and Louisa County delegate—died at age 29. He was remembered for his intellect, eloquence, strong commitment to liberty, and warm, refined character.
  • 1923 – Albemarle County Clerk of Court William L. Maupin dies.
  • 1927 – Broadcasting from the Jefferson Theater, Daily Progress station WKBG goes on the air, becoming Charlottesville’s first radio station.
  • 1952 – Deputy Sheriff Thomas Wolfe is mortally wounded in a shootout with a suspect who had been firing into a neighbor’s home for two days.
