- 1825 – Chartered on 1819, the University of Virginia officially opens its doors. Only five professors, all foreigners, and a few dozen students are present this first day. Construction on the Rotunda and other projects continued after Thomas Jefferson's death in 1826.
- 1865 – Forces under Philip H. Sheridan, including cavalry led by George Armstrong Custer, departed Charlottesville after occupying the town from March 3 to March 7, about a month before the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House.
