- 1797 – In the House of Representatives Chamber of Congress Hall in Philadelphia, Pa., John Adams is inaugurated as 2nd President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson 2nd Vice President
- 1801 – After defeating incumbent John Adams in the 1800 presidential election, Thomas Jefferson becomes the first US President to be inaugurated in Washington, D.C.
- 1809 – James Madison assumes the office of president of the US, succeeding Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson retired to Monticello and spent his remaining years tending to the daily operation of his plantation, planning the University of Virginia, and hosting his friends and other esteemed guests
- 1810 – Egbert R. Watson is born at "Forest Hill," near Milton
- 1865 – Union Civil War General Philip H. Sheridan’s men arrive in Charlottesville and spent the weekend doing considerable damage to the city and surrounding area
- 1884 – Shelton Leake, a nineteenth-century politician, lawyer and teacher from Albemarle County, who served as Virginia’s first lieutenant governor, died
- 1895 – Thomas S. Martin is sworn into his first United States Congressional term
