March 3:

  • 1865 – Following the Battle of Waynesboro, Union forces under Philip H. Sheridan entered Charlottesville. George Armstrong Custer advanced on the town and was met by the mayor and local leaders, who formally surrendered it. Troops from Sheridan’s Army of the Shenandoah encamped for three days in various parts of the city, including Belmont, Park Street, and what is now Locust Grove.
