- 1853 – University of Virginia students J. S. Mosby and George W. Turpin exchanged gunfire at a boarding house near the University, seriously wounding Turpin.
- 1910 – Thomas Lafayette Rosser dies at his home, "Rugby Hall", near the University of Virginia. Rosser was a Confederate general, later a railroad executive and prominent Virginia figure during Reconstruction and the Gilded Age.
- 1893 – William Richard Cole, a Chesapeake and Ohio Railway conductor, is killed near Scottsville in a freight train accident on the James River line. He is later buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Charlottesville.
