- 1775 – The Second Revolutionary Convention appointed Thomas Jefferson alternate to Peyton Randolph as one of Virginia’s delegates to the Second Continental Congress.
- 1869 – Samuel Miller, Albemarle-born tobacconist, merchant, and railroad investor, died at age 76. One of the South’s wealthiest antebellum businessmen, he later endowed the University of Virginia and the Miller School of Albemarle.
