- 1917 – James Rogers McConnell, an aviator during World War I in the Lafayette Escadrille and authored Flying for France, was killed in the area of St. Quentin when two German planes shot him down. He was the first of sixty-four University of Virginia students to die in battle during that War. McConnell was commemorated with a plaque by the French Government and a statue by Gutzon Borglum at the University.
- 1970 – Strother F. Hamm died at age 80. An active civic leader and furniture store owner (Gilmore, Hamm and Snyder Furniture Company once located Downtown at 320 East Main Street). He placed first in the 1948 election for three open seats on the city council.
