- 1751 – James Madison is born near Port Conway in King George County. Madison served as the fourth president of the United States and was the primary author of the Constitution and Architect of the Bill of Rights. His home was Montpelier Estate, a 5,000-acre plantation estate located in Orange County, just north of Charlottesville in the Piedmont of Virginia.
- 2005 – Freedom of Information (FOI) Day established with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Sunshine Week commemorates the birthday of President James Madison, who is widely regarded the foremost advocate for openness in government.
