- 1887 – General Alexander Archer Vandegrift, World War II Medal of Honor recipient and 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps, was born in Charlottesville. He attended the University of Virginia and was commissioned in the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant on January 22, 1909. He became the first active-duty Marine four-star general.
- 1948 – George P. Inge died (aged 89). A prominent African American merchant who operated a store on West Main Street, Inge said that he aimed "to live an upright life and do all I can to better the condition of my fellow man who may not be so well favored."
