March 12:

  • 1773 – Earl of Dunmore dissolves the House of Burgesses after Thomas Jefferson calls for more autonomous rule.
  • 1908 – Passage of the Byrd Liquor Law in Virginia which defined liquor as “all mixtures, preparations and liquids which will produce intoxication” and outlawed any malt drink with an alcohol content greater than 2.25%.
  • 1923 – Charlottesville's First United Methodist Church broke ground for the construction of the congregation's third location. The Daily Progress reported in early January 1925 that the building was scheduled for occupancy in May of that year.
