- 1927 – According to the Daily Progress, the annual Confederate soldiers’ picnic at Palmyra Courthouse Square—held on the last Saturday in July—was “greatly enjoyed by a large number of citizens.” These gatherings were part of a postwar tradition honoring Confederate veterans. While such events were noted into the 1920s, the last significant reunion is believed to have taken place in 1919, when surviving Confederate veterans and World War I soldiers gathered at the courthouse monument.
