- 1765 – Dabney Carr, one of Thomas Jefferson closest friends, married Martha Jefferson, TJ's sister.
- 1930 – The mercury hit 107 degrees in the official thermometer at the University of Virginia’s Leander McCormick Observatory, the highest reading taken there since the observatory has been keeping temperature records. (The next time the temperature hits 107 at the observatory will be on September 6, 1954.)
- 1960 – Sam Jessup died (aged 83).
