January 6:

  • 1935 – “Tiverton,” the $150,000 residence of Mrs. Mariska Owsley at Greenwood is destroyed by fire. Mariska Golgotzen, the Baroness Von Eltz of Vienna, Austria, third wife and widow Dr. Owsley, survived the devastating fire that gutted the structure. ($150,000 in 1935 is equivalent to about $2,851,905 in 2021)
  • 1948 – During Friday night services at the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue, a furnace malfunction resulted in a fire. Harry O’Mansky and Isaac Walters rescued the Torah scrolls, but the fire destroyed the roof and damaged the contents of the building.
  • 1956Henry Chiles, a longtime Albemarle County supervisor, School Board member, active fruit grower and cattle raiser died at his home in Crozet.
