- 1895 – Fairfax Taylor died (aged 78). A Black civil rights advocate during Reconstruction, he lobbied for equality for newly freed citizens and was buried at Maplewood Cemetery. He was the father of Union soldier and politician James T. S. Taylor.
- 1918 – James T. S. Taylor died at age 77 after a week’s illness from pneumonia. Born to free Black parents, he served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War.
- 1940 – Helen Keller, deaf and blind author and activist, stopped briefly at the Monticello Hotel to collect mail and send a telegram before continuing her travels.
