January 28:

• 1893 – At a special meeting of the council, a resolution was passed that City Hall be draped in mourning for 30 days in honor of the late mayor, R. F. Harris.
• 1922 – A record 24.0 inches of snow fell in Charlottesville. The Daily Progress reported that “traffic by auto almost completely suspended and electric cars unable to run.” Known as the Knickerbocker Storm, it remains the largest recorded snowfall in the city’s history.
• 1983 – Carrie Buck, born in Charlottesville and the central figure in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Buck v. Bell, died in Waynesboro.
