- 1806 – James Madison Randolph, grandson of Thomas Jefferson, was born at the President's House, now known as the White House, during daughter Martha's second visit to her father in Washington, D.C.
- 1920 – National Prohibition began when the Volstead Act went into effect. Since 1907, alcohol had been banned in Charlottesville after a local vote to go "dry"
- 1996 – Charles Hunter Brown, building contractor, religious and community leader, died (aged 88)
- 2023 – Revised boundary lines for the nine Charlottesville voting precincts were presented before City Council. The proposal included the retirement of Tonsler Recreation Center and Alumni Hall as polling places and introduced Jackson-Via Elementary and Charlottesville High School as replacements.
