- 1803 – US Senate approves Thomas Jefferson’s nomination of James Monroe and Robert Livingston to negotiate the New Orleans purchase from France. Jefferson saw Monroe’s potential as a future leader (he later became the 5th U.S. President), and this mission helped elevate his profile.
- 1895 – Charlottesville City & Suburban Railway Company launched the city’s first electric streetcar; over 2,000 fares collected in first two days; population ~6,000.
