- 1935 – As part of their American lecture tour, Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas met with the Raven Society in Edgar Allan Poe’s old room at the University of Virginia. Stein's 1934-35 barnstorming visit to her native country transformed her from a noteworthy but rarely glimpsed author, into a national celebrity.
- 1939 – Cain Hawkins died in Charlottesville. The J.F. Bell Funeral Home managed the services and interment to a cemetery near White Hall – where he had been born into slavery in 1862 at the beginning of the Civil War.
