• 181 – US House of Representatives breaks electoral college tie on the thirty-sixth ballot; Thomas Jefferson is elected president and Aaron Burr becomes vice president. Alexander Hamilton, a longtime political antagonist of both Burr and Jefferson, played a key role in breaking the deadlocked presidential election in Jefferson’s favor.
