- 1770 – Shadwell, the Jefferson family estate, burned, destroying most of Thomas Jefferson’s books and papers. Later that year, Jefferson moved to Monticello and began construction of his new home.
- 1825 – Classes were originally scheduled to begin at the University of Virginia, but delayed faculty arrivals postponed the opening until March 7, 1825.
- 1977 – Fire swept through the sanctuary and education building of the First Baptist Church at Second Street NE and East Jefferson Street.
