- 1754 – Jack Jouett, sometimes called the "Paul Revere of the South", was born to tavernkeeper John Jouett Sr. and his wife, Mourning Harris. Best known for his heroic 40-mile ride during the American Revolution.
- 1932 – Dr. George Rutherford Ferguson Sr., a physician and prominent member of Charlottesville's Black community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, died in Charlottesville. He was buried at the Sammons Family Cemetery in Albemarle County. He was the father of George R Ferguson Jr., who played a key role in the area's Civil Rights movement during the 1950's.
- 1941 – Harry H. Gaver, Jr., aged 24, became the first alumnus of the University of Virginia to die in World War II; meeting his end during the early morning surprise Japanese military strike on Pearl Harbor.
- 2020 – Charlottesville City Council approves the idea of exploring a Sister City Connection with Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
