  • 1917 – Meteorological statistics kept at the University Observatory atop Mount Jefferson (also known as Observatory Hill) revealed that the mercury fell to 2 degrees below zero, making it the coldest December recorded by the Department of Astronomy – a record that would not be broken until December 1935.
  • 1956 – In this year’s NFL Championship Game, Roosevelt "Rosie" Brown handled the vaunted Chicago Bears' defenses so well that he awarded Lineman of the Game honors. This was the league's 24th championship game, played at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx in New York City.
  • 2006The Hardware Store restaurant on the Downtown Mall closes.
