  • 1770 – The Bettie Martin iron mine was opened when the Albemarle Iron Works Company was organized “for construction and operation of sawmill and an iron furnace for producing pig iron and also common and flat castings”. An Articles of Agreement was made and implemented. A predecessor to the Albemarle Furnace Company, John Old and John Wilkinson devoted seven years determining the right location, yet Albemarle was "carried on at a very great expense and never produced any profit..." (Walker 1791). Located southwest of Charlottesville in South Garden, the company failing after less than a year of operation.
  • 1908Sam Jessup obtained the oldest written and recorded Pepsi franchise agreement. The Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co of Central Virginia set up shop in the basement of a building on the corner of 4th and Water St, what is now on the Downtown Mall.
