- 1851 – A devastating fire at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., destroys about two-thirds of its 55,000 volumes, including most of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library, sold to the institution in 1815.
- 1922 – Carolers covered the city beginning at 5:50 p.m. and operated over eight routes. As announced in the Daily Progress, “a lighted candle would bring the singers to your door. All contributions will be donated to the Children’s ward of the University Hospital.”
