- 1781 – Shadrack Battles enlisted in the Revolution in Louisa County. He lived in Free State, a community of free African-American people located near what is now the Belvedere neighborhood in Albemarle County.
- 1826 – On his last night in Room 13, West Range, the gifted and popular student, Edgar Allan Poe spoke earnestly of his debts with William Wertenbaker, the University librarian. The next day, Poe left the University, never to return.
- 1824 – Future Senator and Secretary of State Daniel Webster visited Thomas Jefferson at Monticello and left on December 19th.
