- 1862 – Cain Hawkins was born into slavery in the community of Millington, Virginia.
- 1900 – At the August meeting of the City Council, Dr. R. W. Nelson reported the following: The sanitary conditions of the city is bad and needs prompt attention. Filth has accumulated on private lots, and many open privies are in daily use to the extreme annoyance of those living near, and endanger health. We have some typhoid fever in our city and without a doubt it is the result of carelessness on the part of someone…there are numerous places where residents and owners of the property have been ordered to connect with the sewers, but have not done so.
- 1973 – A large fire breaks out in Downtown Charlottesville destroying several businesses including McCrory's department store. Crews from surrounding community helped contain the blaze which burned for at least fours before being extinguished.
