  • 1927 – The giant searchlight atop the Monticello Hotel, billed as "the largest one in the world," was tested between 8 and 9 p.m. The 1,380,000,000 candle-power Jefferson Shaft of Light illuminated Monticello, three miles away, and served as the nation’s most powerful aviation beacon.
  • 1940 – Dr. James H. Dillard died at his home in Charlottesville. Dillard was a prominent educator and reformer who, in the early twentieth century, became one of the most active white advocates for improving educational opportunities for African Americans in the South. He is the namesake of Dillard University, formed in 1930 when two historically Black colleges merged.
  • 1975 – Charlottesville native and NFL legend Roosevelt "Rosie" Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
