- 1842 – John Patten Emmet, first professor of Natural History at the University of Virginia, appointed by Thomas Jefferson, died in New York at age 47, shortly after returning from Florida on a ship lost at sea for over a month.
- 1865 – Mosby Monroe Parsons, Charlottesville-born U.S. officer in the Mexican–American War and Confederate brigadier general, was killed by bandits in Nuevo León, Mexico (aged 43).
- 2015 – Julian Bond, civil rights leader and University of Virginia professor emeritus, died in Florida after a brief illness (aged 75).
