April 29:

  • 1862 – Lieutenant Colonel John Bowie Strange (VMI Class of 1842) was promoted to colonel. Five months later, he was killed during the Maryland Campaign of the American Civil War. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery.
  • 1900 – At about' 11 o'clock this Saturday, the wine cellar of the Hotopp Wine Company and its contents were destroyed by fire which, "it is almost certain was of incendiary origin. This is the third fire in six months from which the Hotopp's have suffered."
