  • 1820 – From Monticello, Thomas Jefferson writes to John Holmes about the Missouri Compromise and the expansion of slavery. In this notable late-life letter, Jefferson expresses deep concern that extending slavery into western territories could ultimately threaten the survival of the Union.
  • 1898 – The Spanish–American War begins. Men from Charlottesville and Albemarle County enlist in Virginia volunteer regiments, including the 2nd Virginia Volunteer Infantry.
