- 1743 – Thomas Jefferson is born on April 2 under the Julian (“Old Style”) calendar. Following the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1752, his birthday shifted to April 13, which became the commonly observed date. His gravestone at Monticello records April 2.
- 1854 – Benjamin Tonsler is born near Earlysville in Albemarle County. Born into slavery, he later became a leading African American educator.
- 1942 – The United States Secretary of War orders the establishment of the School of Military Government at the University of Virginia, a wartime program to train officers in civil administration of occupied territories.
- 1985 – The Radisson Hotel (later the Omni Charlottesville Hotel) opens at the west end of the expanded Downtown Mall, marking a significant phase in the area’s redevelopment.
