- 1893 – According to the Daily Progress, “John L. Sullivan in 'The Man from Boston' is the attraction at the Opera House this evening. In the last act occurs the pugilistic encounter between Sullivan and Dan Droyer, which is the popular feature of the play.” Known simply as John L., he was the last Bare-knuckle Boxing Champion.
- 1917 – Charlottesville police officer Meredith A. Thomas was shot and killed confronting men stealing hams from a warehouse.
- 1922 – Henry Merwin Shrady died in New York City while both the Grant and Lee monuments were being cast by Roman Bronze Works.
