  • 1893 – According to the Daily Progress, “John L. Sullivan in 'The Man from Boston' is the attraction at the Opera House this evening. In the last act occurs the pugilistic encounter between Sullivan and Dan Droyer, which is the popular feature of the play.” Known simply as John L., he was the last Bare-knuckle Boxing Champion.
  • 1917 – Detailed to watch a downtown warehouse following a series of thefts, Extra Policeman Meredith A. Thomas confronted a man caught stealing hams. While struggling with the thief, the thief's partner struck Thomas on the head with a brick from behind, took his revolver and shot him in the abdomen. Both thieves were captured, convicted, sentenced to death and executed in the electric chair later that year on June 20th.
  • 1922Henry Merwin Shrady died in New York City while both the Grant and Lee monuments were being cast by Roman Bronze Works.
